Privacy Policy

"AP Chinese" (the "App") is a study companion for the AP Chinese Language and Culture exam. This Privacy Policy explains what information the App handles, why, and how it is used.

Summary (App Store Privacy Nutrition Label)

Using Apple's official data-type categories, here is what the App collects and why:

Apple Data TypeWhat it isLinked to you?Used for
User Content — Other User ContentThe text of practice answers you submit for AI evaluation (typed, or transcribed on-device from your speech)Not linked — no account or persistent identifier ties it to youApp Functionality only (generating your evaluation feedback)
Purchases — Purchase HistorySubscription statusHandled entirely by Apple's App Store / StoreKitApp Functionality (unlocking subscriber features)

Nothing else is collected. In particular, the App does not collect: Contact Info, Health & Fitness, Financial Info, Precise or Coarse Location, Sensitive Info, Contacts, Browsing History, Search History, User or Device Identifiers, Usage/Analytics Data, Diagnostics, or any data used for third-party advertising or tracking. Under Apple's definition, data that is processed only on your device and never transmitted off it — such as your recorded voice audio, see below — does not count as "collected."

No Account Required

The App does not require account registration or login. We do not collect your name, email address, or any other personal identifiers.

AI-Evaluated Practice Answers

Some practice features (Written Q&A, Spoken Q&A, Project Presentation, Project Q&A, Story Narration, and Email Response) offer AI-generated feedback on your answers. When you submit an answer for evaluation, the text of your answer and the associated practice question — categorized under Apple's App Privacy framework as User Content — is sent to one of the following third-party AI providers to generate feedback:

This data is used solely for App Functionality — generating the evaluation feedback shown back to you — and never for advertising, tracking, analytics, or sharing with data brokers. It is not linked to your identity: the App has no account system, and no user ID, device ID, or other identifier is attached to the submitted text. We do not control how long these third-party providers retain this data; please refer to their respective privacy policies for details. Because this text is sent to external services, please avoid including personal information (such as your full name, address, or other identifying details) in your practice answers.

Microphone and Speech Recognition

Spoken practice features use your device's microphone to record your voice and Apple's Speech Recognition, configured to run entirely on your device rather than Apple's servers, to transcribe your spoken answer into Chinese text. This transcription happens locally on your device — your voice audio itself is never stored or transmitted off your device. Under Apple's App Privacy definition of "collect" (data transmitted off-device), this on-device audio processing does not constitute data collection. Only the resulting text is sent for AI evaluation, as described above, when you submit it for feedback.

Subscriptions and Payment

Vocabulary Flashcards and the FAQ section are free. AI-evaluated practice features are unlocked through an auto-renewing monthly subscription, processed entirely by Apple through the App Store's In-App Purchase system. The App does not collect, see, or store your payment or billing information — this is handled directly by Apple in accordance with Apple's own privacy policy.

Data Storage

Practice content (questions, audio, images, and reference exam materials) is bundled with the App. Your subscription status is cached locally on your device via Apple's StoreKit framework. We do not operate our own servers or databases that store your personal data.

Third-Party Services

The App does not integrate any advertising SDKs or third-party analytics services. The only third parties that process any user-submitted data are the AI evaluation providers (DeepSeek and Anthropic) described above, and Apple (for Speech Recognition and In-App Purchases), each governed by their own privacy policies. None of this data is used for third-party advertising, is combined with data from other companies' apps or websites for advertising purposes, or is shared with data brokers — none of it meets Apple's definition of "tracking."

Children's Privacy

The App is intended for students preparing for the AP Chinese exam, who may include minors. We do not knowingly collect personal information from any user, including children. As noted above, practice answers submitted for AI evaluation should not include personal information. If you are a parent or guardian with questions about your child's use of the App, please contact us using the information below.

If this Privacy Policy is updated, the latest version will be posted on this page. Users are encouraged to check back periodically.
